This week:
The final match of the 2009 season is upon the Western Oregon University soccer team as it closes out the schedule with Central Washington, Wednesday (Nov. 3), at 3:00 p.m.
Senior Salute:
The Wolves will be honoring seniors Megan Herber, Jessica Hicks, Kelsey Harms and Kristie Adkins before the match as they put on the Western Oregon jersey for the last time.
The Wolves:
WOU went on the road for a pair of Great Northwest Athletic Conference matches last week and went 1-1. The win was just the second road victory of the season for the Wolves, as it knocked off Northwest Nazarene 1-0 on a Rachelle Kliewer goal in the 79th minute.
Kliewer is now fourth in the league with 19 points and tied for fourth with eight goals. Goalie Brittney Rigturp is also among the GNAC leaders. She is sixth in goals against (1.79), fourth in save percentage (.775) and tied for second in saves (79). As a team, WOU leads the league with 113 saves.
The Wolves have also received multiple goals this season from Jessica Hicks, Kelsey Fuik and Chelsy Okuma with two apiece…Kliewer leads the team with two game-winning goals while Okuma, Jill Petersen and Cassandra Olson have chipped in one apiece…Hicks is second on the squad with six points.
A look at Central Washington:
The Wildcats are coming off their biggest win of the season as they stunned No. 6 ranked Seattle Pacific 3-1, on Oct. 31. CWU is now 7-9-1 on the season and 4-5-1 in the GNAC.
Kaycie Hutchins leads the team with 16 points (four goals, eight assists) and Kelsy Villegas with five goals. Goaltender Amber Easterbrook is giving up 1.31 goals per match and has a .729 save percentage to go along with five shutouts.
Series with the Wildcats:
The Wolves 2-0 win in Ellensburg, Oct. 8th, extended their lead in the all-time series to 12-7-4. The victory also snapped a three-match winless streak for WOU in the series.
Recap of last WOU-CWU match:
WOU scored two first half goals and held on for a 2-0 win in the first meeting of the season between the teams. Brittney Rigtrup earned conference player honors after becoming just one of seven GNAC student-athletes ever to record 10 or more saves in a shutout.
