Herron/Martini earn academic honor

MONMOUTH, Ore. - Amy Herron and Lisa Martini have each been named to the prestigious CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII team for the second consecutive season.

Martini has now totaled three CoSIDA honors in her career as she has won back-to-back first team honors as a junior and senior, after receiving second team honors as a sophomore. She has put together a 3.96 grade point average as an Exercise Science major and an Entrepreneurship minor. On the court, the middle blocker from Philomath, Ore., leads the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with a .378 hitting percentage. Martini is also only the third GNAC volleyball player to earn first team CoSIDA honors twice in a career.

Herron registered a 3.93 cumulative GPA as an Exercise Science and Psychology major to earn CoSIDA honors for the second straight season. This season, Herron was voted to the All-District VIII first team after being a third team selection as a junior. This setter from Spokane, Wash., is going to lead the Wolves in assist in all four seasons of eligibility.

Both players will now be listed on the Academic All-American ballot.

The Western Oregon volleyball team is nearing the final stretch of the 2009 season. This weekend it is on the road to face Montana State Billings on Thursday (Nov. 5) and Northwest Nazarene on Saturday (Nov. 7). The Wolves final game of the season will be Nov. 12th at Saint Martin's.

Softball
Tyler Sutherland went 6-for-13 with two doubles, two home runs, four RBI and five runs to help Western Oregon take three of four games from Montana State Billings.

Baseball
Lopez had seven hits, including a double and two home runs, to lead the eight-time defending conference champion Wolves to three wins in four games in their conference opening series at NNU.
