PALO ALTO, Calif. -
Ashley Potter leaped a distance of 39-8.75 (12.11m) in the women's triple jump at the Stanford Invitational to claim the top mark in the history of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and highlight Western Oregon University track & field team's performance this weekend.
That mark was just four centimeters off the NCAA automatic qualifying standard (12.15m) and moved her into third place on the 2010 Division II performance list. Potter also broke the 16-year Western Oregon school record previously held by Alicia Marshall (38-11.75).
"Ashley has a fresh and competitive attitude about track & field," explained Western Oregon head coach
Mike Johnson. "She is one of those people that likes to enjoy the sport, and she was enjoying it today.
"Coach Isaac Frederick has done a good job conditioning her and bringing her into our program," Johnson continued. "She has been a great addition to our team."
In the same meet,
Chris Reed ran an NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the 5000m with a time of 14:24.24. His time was the fourth-best mark in the history of the GNAC and moved him into second place on the Wolves' all-time top 10 list.
"Track & field is part of Chris and he really enjoys the sport," said coach Johnson. "He is in it for the long term, and what you see right now is not the middle but the beginning of his career."
Janelle Everetts grabbed the second-best mark in the GNAC and the fifth-best in school history in the women's 800m run with a time of 2:13.15. That time also earned her an NCAA provisional qualifying standard by nearly one-and-a-half seconds (2:14.50).
Mike Schmidt also moved into fifth in Western Oregon history in the 800m with a time of 1:53.29 in the event. He also placed himself third on the 2010 GNAC performance list.
"If Western Oregon is to fulfill its promise at the Division II level it needs to perform on the big stage," Johnson noted. "The quality of competition at this meet challenged our very young team, but that is what we have to do to improve (as a program)."
At the San Francisco State Carnival Meet,
Amanda Wright ascended to fifth place in WOU history in the 5000m with a time of 18:09.12.
McKenzie Redberg ran a time of 25.91 in the 200m and
Lexi Pola posted a time of 59.13 in the 400m, as both moved into second place on the 2010 GNAC performance list. Pola's time also moved her into a tie for 10th place on the Wolves' all-time top 10 list.
Erika Snawder ran a time of 2:19.75 to move to third place in the 800m on the conference performance list this season.
On the men's side,
Zach Massari registered a time of 1:56.26 in the 800m to grab the sixth-best mark on the GNAC performance list.
Connor Kasler moved into sixth place in the 1500m with a time of 4:00.26.
