MONMOUTH, Ore. – Melissa Fowler has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Western Oregon University, head coach Greg Bruce announced Wednesday, April 14.

Fowler, a McDonald's All-American Nominee and two-time First Team All-Pacific Conference selection, comes to Monmouth after a stellar four-year career at Canby High School that saw her lead the Cougars to four-straight Oregon state playoff appearances. The 5-10 forward led her team in scoring and rebounding each of her last two seasons and averaged 12.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 3.2 steals per contest during her senior campaign while serving as a team captain.

“Melissa is the epitome of a complete player,” Bruce said. “She is a stat stuffer who has the skills to help her team in a variety of areas. She has outstanding athleticism, which allows her to run the floor and be a disruptive force in our full-court press, both of which will enhance our up-tempo style of play. Most of all, Melissa will bring a hard-nosed mind set along with a competitive spirit that will help our program take another step toward the top of the GNAC.”

“Melissa has been our go-to player the past two years as well as being our best defender,” Canby head coach Heather Roberts said. “She is very team-oriented and was willing to play any position that was asked of her for the good of the team. She is a quality person and will be missed by many at Canby High School.”

Along with her time on the court, Fowler was also a four-year starter on Canby's varsity soccer team as well as a four-year member of Canby's track team. She earned all-conference honors her senior year in soccer. In track, she was a four-year state qualifier as a sprinter; she currently owns the fifth fastest 200m time in Oregon, and has a personal best second-place finish at state. Fowler also served as team captain on both squads her junior and senior years.

Fowler enters WOU with a 3.80 GPA, and plans to major in environmental science. Her parents are Kirk and Andrea, and her brother, Jake, is a student at Oregon State.
