What's happening:
The Western Oregon University track & field team will come together this weekend as the complete team will be Forest Grove, Ore., for the Pacific Twilight, Saturday, May 1, at noon.
The field:
The meet will include over 13 teams from throughout the Northwest. Teams representing the state of Oregon in the meet will include Western Oregon, Portland State, Pacific University, Willamette, Linfield, Concordia, Northwest Christian, Eastern Oregon, Southern Oregon, Oregon Tech, George Fox, Corban and Portland. There will also be a number of community college from Oregon including Lane, Mt. Hood and Clackamas.
Coach Johnson's thoughts:
On coming together as a team: "We had the choice of splitting up (the team), but it is important to bring the team together to focus on conference championships and nationals."
More on the team: "It is important for the team to see all the best of Western Oregon in one place at one time and to support each other."
On the Pacific Twilight: "The quality of this meet is high and they do a great job running the meet."
On the team's current training: "This is a very important part of the year. We want to freshen and strengthen while avoiding illness.
More on the training: "We are practicing in event groups of two to four student-athletes, because even athletes in the same events do not respond the same way to training. By having the student-athletes in small groups we can mix training to benefit of themselves and training partners, but it is very time intensive."
Wolves with provisional standards:
Janelle Everetts earned a provisional qualifying standard in the women's 800m with a time of 2:13.15 at the Stanford Invitational.
Chris Reed has his provisional mark in the men's 5000m with a time of 14:24.24, which he earned at the Stanford Invite. Reed also has a provisional standard in the 10k with a school record time of 29:52.39.
Matson Hardie earned the first provisional standard of his outdoor career in the men's triple jump at the Mt. SAC Relays with a leap of 48-1.75 (14.67m).
Jason Slowey has NCAA provisional standards in the shot put and the discus. He is the only male in the GNAC to have a provisional mark in the shot put with a toss of 52-3.75 (15.94m). He is third in the conference in the discus with a mark of 162-2 (49.42m).
