SALEM, Ore. - After a winter of great running, jumping and hurdling the javelin throwers stole the show on a rainy and windy afternoon. Amanda Schumaker and Carolanne Powers each earned NCAA provisional qualifying standards in the women's javelin with career-best tosses to highlight the Western Oregon University track & field team's performances at the Willamette Invitational.

Schumaker won the event with a throw of 140-0 (42.68m), to surpass the NCAA provisional standard of 127-11 (39.0m) by over 12 feet. Her toss moved her into a tie for seventh overall on the 2010 NCAA performance list.

Powers placed second in the event with a mark of 138-3 (42.15m). That distance improved upon her season-best mark by two-and-a-half feet, as she remained 10th in the NCAA standings.

Will Crook nearly grabbed a provisional qualifying mark on the men's side. He recorded a throw of 191-6 (58.36m) to finish second in the event and only .64m short of the NCAA provisional standard (59.0m). His throw moved him into second place on the GNAC performance list.

Mandy Keifer and Kaitlyn Reid each posted season-best times in the women's 100m hurdles to move to seventh and ninth on the Wolves' all-time top 10 list, respectively. Keifer ran a 14.94 to move to second on the 2010 GNAC performance list and Reid posted a time of 15.02 to move into third.

Reid also improved her career-best time in the 400m hurdles with a mark of 1:04.01 to ascend into fifth place in WOU history. Her third place finish in the event also moved her to third on the GNAC performance list.

Ashley Potter climbed into third place in the conference in the long jump with a leap of 17-4.75 (5.30m). She also ranks first in the GNAC in the triple jump.

Jayce Giddens remained at No. 2 in the pole vault on the GNAC performance list, as he won the event at the Willamette Invite by clearing 15-1 (4.60m). Austin Roberts placed second in the event with a season-best mark of 13-7.25 (4.15m).

Jason Slowey won the shot put with a toss of 48-9 (14.86m).

"Many people were running out of event," explained Western Oregon head coach Mike Johnson. "We were able to get them training, as well as another GNAC event for them to participate in. We will continue to focus on getting better the rest of the year.

"If we were able to survive this weekend uninjured we met our biggest goal of the meet," Johnson continued.

The Western Oregon track & field team will host its first meet of the year next Friday with the John Knight Twilight. The field events will start at 3:00 p.m., and the running events will begin at 4:00 p.m. The meet will also feature an alumni and parent mile run.
