WOU caps off successful Twilight meet

Slowey set two lifetime PRs and moved up the GNAC performance list in three throwing events

MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon University men's and women's track & field teams capped off its only home meet of the season by having five student-athletes moving into first on the 2010 Great Northwest Athletic Conference performance list and one earning an NCAA auto qualifying standard.

Carolanne Powers set the school record and earned an NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the women's javelin with a career-best throw of 154-0 (46.94m). That mark eclipsed the previous school record by two feet and gave her the GNAC lead by over 12 feet. She now stands second in the NCAA and is one of just three women to earn an auto standard this season.

Amanda Wright grabbed the top spot on the 2010 GNAC performance list as she won the women's 10k with a time of 37:22.02. That time elevated her to second on the Wolves' all-time top 10 list and was just 2.02 seconds off an NCAA provisional qualifying standard.

Mandy Keifer ascended to first place on the GNAC performance list and to eighth in school history in the women's long jump with a mark of 17-11.5 (5.47m). She now leads the conference by 4.5 inches.

Matson Hardie won the long jump at the John Knight Twilight with leap of 23-2.5 (7.07m). That mark moved him to second on the GNAC performance list. He also won the triple jump at the meet and climbed into first on the GNAC performance list with a career-best leap of 45-8 (13.92m).

Jason Slowey recorded lifetime personal-records in both the hammer and the shot put to win both events. Slowey tossed the shot put 51-9 (15.77m) to take over the lead in the GNAC by 21 inches and move into ninth in school history. He threw the hammer 166-0 (51.36m) to move into third in the GNAC. He also went into second in the conference in the discus with a throw of 156-3 (47.64m), which is two inches short of the league lead.

Matt Schryvers won the hammer throw with a season-best toss of 168-6 (51.36m). He now stands second on the 2010 GNAC performance list.

Chris Reed won the 1500m run at the John Knight Twilight with a career-best time of 3:53.11. His time was just .11 seconds short of an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 3:53.0 and improved his seventh place mark on the Wolves' all-time top 10 list.

Braxton Jackson finished first in the men's 10k with a season-best time of 31:43.56. That time moved him to fourth on the GNAC performance list. Justin Karr placed second in the event at the John Knight Twilight with a time of 31:45.89 to place his name fifth in the GNAC performance list and to move into eighth in school history.

Kaitlyn Reid continues to keep getting better in the women's 100m hurdles. She posted a time of 14.82 to win the event and move into second on the GNAC performance list. She also climbed to seventh on the Wolves' all-time top 10 list.

McKenzie Redberg moved to second in the GNAC with a time of 25.77 in the 200m. That mark was just .02 seconds off the 10th-best mark in school history.

In the men's 1500m race both Mike Schmidt and Zach Massari also recorded season-best times in the event with marks of 3:58.63 and 4:01.31, respectively.

The Wolves's track & field team will be spread out among three meets next weekend. Some of the members of the team will be at the Mt. SAC Relays and the Long Beach Invitational, while others will compete in the Lewis and Clark Invite.
