CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Carolanne Powers and Amanda Schumaker became the first pair of teammates to earn All-American honors for the Western Oregon University track & field team in five seasons, as the duo placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the javelin throw at the 2010 Division II National Championships.

Powers, a freshman from Salem, Ore. (McNary High School), recorded a throw of 144-9 (44.11m) to finish third in her flight and fifth overall. She earned her best mark of the meet on her very first throw and captured four meet points for the Wolves.

Schumaker also recorded her best toss of the afternoon on her first throw. The freshman from Gladstone, Ore. (Gladstone High School), notched a distance of 144-5 (44.01m) to place sixth, grab three meet points and earn All-American status.

"They raised their competitive comfort," said Western Oregon head coach Mike Johnson about the women's javelin throwers. "They were consistent on all throws and now have a better idea what they are training for in the future."

Chris Reed (Klamath Falls, Ore.) earned a 10th place finish in the men's 5k with a time of 14:35. This was Reed's second top 10 finish of the national championships. He placed ninth in the 10k on Thursday.

"It was a slow early pace but he picked up at the end and passed three people in the final 400m," noted Johnson.

In other action, Ashley Potter (Springfield, Ore.) placed 11th in a very competitive women's triple jump field, with a mark of 38-9.5 (11.82m). All the women second through 14th place finished within one meter of each other. Potter herself was just eight centimeters out of scoring a point.

In the men's javelin, Nathan Rowlett (Portland, Ore.) and Will Crook (Jewell, Ore.) finished 15th and 16th, respectively. Rowlett notched a throw of 175-2 (53.39m) on his third attempt in flight two and Crook registered his mark of 174-5 (53.17m) on his first throw in flight one.

"Everyone raised their competitive basement," Johnson said. "Because of the experience they had today everyone will be more capable in the future.

"This brings to close a season which we didn't achieve all our goals but a large number of them," Johnson continued. "A great deal was accomplished by our team this year."

The Western Oregon track & field team will hold a year end banquet next Sunday, June 6, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. More details on this dinner will be posted later in the week.
