MONMOUTH, Ore. - Western Oregon University All-American javelin thrower
Carolanne Powers has been selected as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Female Freshman of the Year.
Powers came to Western Oregon from McNary High School in Keizer, Ore. She earned a fifth place finish at the national meet with a throw of 144-9 (44.11m). Her season-best mark of 154-9 (47.16m) came en route to winning the GNAC title. That mark also set the Western Oregon school record and earned her the third-best mark in the history of the conference.
Powers also ran sprints for the Wolves in addition to throwing the javelin. She registered season-best times of 12.88 in the 100m, a 25.96 in the 200m and a 1:01.12 in the 400m.
