MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon University defense was very sharp in the first scrimmage of Fall Camp, Friday, August 20.
The Wolves' red team was swarming the ball and making plays on the ball both in the passing game and on the ground. They kept consistent pressure on the passer and did not let the running game get started.
"It was a good effort by the defense," said Western Oregon head coach
Arne Ferguson. "We had good rotations out there and it was nice to get back on the game field."
The offense started the scrimmage with 60 scripted plays before going to an open playbook in the second half. The white team used a variety of quarterbacks throughout the game but was unable to sustain drives against the Wolves' experienced defense.
"We were just a step overthrowing our wide receivers," Ferguson explained. "You can have good timing on the practice field but when you get out on the game field the timing can change a little."
Western Oregon also ran all its special teams formations, as it practiced everything from punts, to kickoffs and field goals.
The Wolves will have a chance to work on that timing in their two scrimmages next week. The first will be held on Tuesday (Aug. 24) and the final scrimmage of Fall Camp will be Friday (Aug. 27). Both scrimmages are open to the public and will begin at 4:00 p.m.
