Kyle Lane of the Western Oregon University track & field team has been named co-Great Northwest Athletic Conference Freshman of the year, while
Mike Johnson claimed Male Team Coach of the Year, as announced by the conference office Thursday (Mar. 17).
Lane is a horizontal jumper from Portland, Ore. (Reynolds High School) and in his first season with the Wolves he won the long jump at the Great Northwest Athletic Indoor Championships with the second-longest leap in conference history (23-4.5/7.12m). That mark also earned him All-West Region honors.
Johnson led the Western Oregon men's track & field team to its fourth straight GNAC indoor championship. Johnson now has a total of 10 GNAC Coach-of-the-Year awards also winning for men's indoor in 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2010, women's outdoor in 2004, 2005 and 2008 and men's outdoor in 2004 and 2008. Johnson also recently claimed the USTFCCCA Men's Regional Coach of the Year honors.
This weekend the Wolves' track & field team will be divided amongst the Oregon Preview and the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open. The Lewis & Clark meet will be held Friday and Saturday, while the Oregon Preview will be a one-day event (Saturday).
