SALEM, Ore. –
Amanda Schumaker looked eager to return to Nationals as the 2010 All-American in the javelin threw an NCAA provisional qualifying standard in the first meet of the outdoor season at the Willamette Opener.
The sophomore from Gladstone, Ore. (Gladstone High School) registered her provisional standard of 145-10 (44.45m) on her second throw of the meet. Her throw was just eight inches short of her personal record.
In addition to Schumaker, Western Oregon also had 11 event winners, five on the men's side and six on the women's.
Annie Hayward won the women's 400m with a time of 58.83 to move into ninth in school history. She was joined in the winners' circle by fellow sprinter
Crystal McDowell, who captured first place in the 200m with a time of 26.64.
Jenny Leaf gave the Wolves a winner in a mid-distance race with a time of 2:19.85 in the 800m.
Kaityln Reid and
Ali Mosher placed one-two in the women's 110m hurdles with times of
15.03 and 15.44, respectively. Reid also followed that win up with a second place finish in 400m hurdles (1:04.55).
Both women's relay teams were able to cross the finish line in first place. The 4x100m team of
Madison McClung,
Lexi Pola,
Shanai Campbell and
Lacey Meusec registered a time of 49.11 over one lap to earn the win. The 4x400m relay team of
Janelle Everetts,
Jenny Leaf,
Zoe Skordahl and
Annie Hayward followed with another win by finishing in the time of 4:02.02.
The hurdles highlighted the performances on the men's side.
Jordan Werner won the 110m hurdles in a time of 15.67 and
Andy Loscutoff captured the title in the 400m hurdles by crossing the finish line in 56.66. Kodt Rhodes placed second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 57.47.
Gabe Mendenhall was the lone field event winner for either the men or the women. He cleared 6-2 (1.88m) in the high jump to earn the victory.
Ryan Hanson picked up a win in the 400m when he posted a time of 51.60.
Michael Shogren had the win for the Wolves in the 800m with the time of 2:00.20.
Western Oregon did not compete any of the five student-athletes that represent the University next weekend at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.
