MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Great Northwest Athletic Conference has named Western Oregon's Brett Campbell the conference's outdoor track & field freshman of year.

Campbell won the men's 110m hurdles at the 2011 GNAC Outdoor Championships in Monmouth with a time of 15.49. The Bend, Ore., native entered the finals of the conference championships as the No. 2 seed but edged out Cory Okazaki by .01 seconds to earn the title.

"This shows why you need a state champion on your roster," Western Oregon head coach Mike Johnson explained. "He has the athletic brain of a winner and he really understands track & field."

Campbell posted a season-best time of 15.35 in the 110m hurdles at the Pacific Twilight on Apr. 29. He also helped the Western Oregon 4x100m relay team capture six team points at the GNAC Championships with a third place finish (42.40), as Campbell ran the second leg.
