WOU HOMECOMING WEEK ACTIVITIES - WOU STUDENTS, ALUMNI AND GENERAL PUBLIC
MONMOUTH, Ore. – Winners of three straight contests, the Western Oregon football team returns home to host Dixie State for Homecoming at McArthur Field on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 1:00 p.m. in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest.
“It's obviously a huge game for the team and we know Dixie State will come in here ready to play” head coach
Arne Ferguson said. “We've been getting better each week and we have really had some guys step up when needed. The team is excited about the way they are playing and is looking forward to playing in front of a great Homecoming crowd.”
The Wolves enter the week with a mark of 3-3 overall, 3-2 in league play, as they find themselves one game back of Central Washington in the GNAC title race. WOU is coming off an impressive, 42-14, road win at nationally-ranked Humboldt State as the Wolves utilized a 21-0 run in the first quarter to cruise to their third-straight victory.
The win over the Lumberjacks was largely due to the stellar effort by the WOU defense as the Wolves held the league-leading offense to just 230 total yards. With the performance, WOU moved up to second in the league in scoring defense at 21.7 points per game while ranking third in total defense at 348.7 yards per game.
Senior
Bryce Peila continues to lead the Wolves on the defensive side of the ball as he leads the team and ranks fourth in the league at 8.2 tackles per game.
Defensive lineman
Kraig Akins is also having a standout year for the Wolves as he has made 34 tackles while recording 2.5 sacks. Last week against HSU, Akins had seven tackles, including two quarterback sacks as he was named GNAC Defensive Player of the Week.
As an offense, WOU remains fifth in the league in scoring at 21.0 points per game while ranking fifth in total offense at 350.5 yards per contest. Senior quarterback
Cody VonAppen continues his solid play as he ranks second in the league in total offense at 249.7 yards per contest while leading the team and ranking fifth in the GNAC with 63.3 rushing yards per game. For the season, VonAppen has accounted for 13 touchdowns as he has thrown eight touchdown passes to go along with five rushing scores.
After handing Central Washington its first league loss last week, Dixie State enters the game against the Wolves with a record of 3-3 overall, 3-2 in conference play. The Red Storm are led by Griff Robles as he ranks fifth in the league in total offense at 169.3 yards per contest. As a team, Dixie State ranks fourth in the league in scoring and total offense at 21.2 points per game and 378.5 yards per contest, respectively.
WOU leads the all-time series, 9-2; however, the Red Storm captured the first meeting of the season as they forced six Wolves turnovers en route to a 24-10 victory.
Tickets to the important Homecoming contest can be purchased through the WOU ticket office online or by calling 503-838-8051. Prices for the game range from $10 to $15.
Following the game against the Red Storm, WOU will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 20, when the Wolves travel to Burnaby, B.C., to face Simon Fraser in a league contest at 2:00 p.m.
