Women set four school records at first day of GNACs

NAMPA, Idaho - The Western Oregon women's track & field team set four school records Friday at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.

Charlene Harber began the meet by taking second place in the pentathlon with 3,372 points to eclipse the Western Oregon record by 30 points. She won the shot put with a toss of 39-3 (11.96m) and took second in the long jump with a leap of 17-11.5 (5.47m). She also placed third in the high jump, fourth in the 800m and fifth in the 60m hurdles.

Ashley Potter initially claimed the Western Oregon record in the women's 60m hurdles with a time of 9.08 to beat the time of Kaitlyn Reid by a hundredth of a second. However, just three minutes later Janna Vander Meulen would knock Potter out of the top spot with a time of 9.06, making Potter's school record one of the shortest lived in history. Both times qualified the women for the finals in the event which will take place on Saturday.

Potter would not be too disappointed though as she set the school record in the long jump with a mark of 18-2.5 (5.55m). The mark earned her third place at the meet and garnered six team points for the Wolves.

Madison McClung broke her own school record which she set last season by .03 seconds in the 60m dash with a time of 9.81. She finished second in the qualifying heats and will run in the finals on Saturday.

Kody Rhodes highlighted the men's performances at the meet. He ran a time of 8.57 in the 60m hurdles to move to seventh on the Wolves' all-time top 10 list. He along with Bobby Alexander in the 60m dash both qualified for the finals in their respective races.

The Wolves were able to put 16 points on the board thanks to a trio of long jumpers. Matson Hardie took second place and eight team points with a mark of 23-1.75 (7.05m). Kyle Lane finished right behind him with a leap of 23-0.75 (7.03m) to take third and six team points. Jake Hyde took seventh and two team points.

At the end of the day the men were ranked fourth with 22.5 points, .5 points behind Montana State Billings for third place. The women sit sixth with 22 points, one point behind MSU Billings as well.

"We are just focused on controlling what we can do," said Western Oregon head coach Mike Johnson. "We organized our entries to maximize what we can do, and we will maximize those to conclusion.

"This is as competitive as I've seen our team," Johnson continued. "We have the heart and the human resources. We may not have as much depth as in the past but we are still very competitive."

The GNAC Indoor Championships will continue on Saturday, Feb. 18 beginning at 8:00 a.m.
