MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon track and field team returns to action this week as the Wolves host the seventh annual John Knight Twilight meet on Friday, April 12, with field events starting at 2:00 p.m. while track events are slated to start at 3:50 p.m.

“This is a great event that honors the legendary John Knight and the great history and tradition of Western Oregon track and field,” head coach Mike Johnson said. “I know our team is excited to compete at home for the first time this season and they will do so against a strong field. It's something we have been looking forward to for a long time.”

In its seventh year, the John Knight Twilight honors former WOU track and field head coach John Knight. Knight coached WOU's track and field program from 1989 to 2003 and had 17 individual national champions during that time, and won national coach of the year honors in 2003 (NCAA) and 1993 (NAIA).

In his collegiate career, he coached over 250 All-Americans and was named a conference coach of the year for eight consecutive seasons from 1996-2003 in the Cascade Conference, Pacific West Conference and Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Knight is a member of the NAIA track and field Hall of Fame.

The Wolves enter the meet as one of the top squads on the West Coast as the men's and women's teams are ranked in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II regional polls. The men's squad enters ranked sixth in the region while the women enter the meet ranked ninth.

On the men's side, Chris Olsen is slated to run in the 800-meters for the Wolves as the junior ranks fourth in the country in the event after posting a time of 1:51.43 at the Stanford Invite.

Senior javelin thrower Amanda Schumaker will also compete for the Wolves as the three-time All-American will compete in her final John Knight meet. Schumaker enters the weekend having already met the NCAA championship standard mark following her toss of 154-09 to win the Oregon Preview.

Tickets to the John Knight meet are $6 for adults and $4 for non-WOU students and seniors as current WOU students are admitted for free with a valid ID card.

Following the John Knight meet, WOU will return to action on Thursday, April 18, at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif.
