MONMOUTH, Ore. – Competing on the home track for the first time this season, the Western Oregon track & field team had a tremendous showing at the seventh annual John Knight Twilight on Friday evening.
Javelin thrower
Seabre Church highlighted an exciting night as her toss of 151-05.25 won the event, established a new personal record and placed her fourth on the NCAA performance list this season with the qualifying mark.
“What an effort by Seabre (Church),” head coach
Mike Johnson said. “Our javelin throwers have been doing a tremendous job all season and it was great to see her get an outstanding mark. Seabre and Amanda (Schumaker) have two of the top five marks in the nation at this point and that is simply phenomenal.”
Schumaker finished second in the event with a toss of 150-07.75 while
Justin Larson led WOU in the men's javelin throw as his toss of 200-09 placed him in third.
WOU's middle distance runners continue to have a strong season as the Wolves once again had a strong showing in the 800-meters.
Chris Olsen finished in second-place with a time of 1:51.97 while
Ryan Hansen was just behind, finishing in third, with a time of 1:53.33.
The event was won by former Oregon standout and two-time Olympian Andrew Wheating as he crossed the finish line in a time of 1:50.75.
“Chris and Ryan continue to run outstanding races,” Johnson said. “Having Andrew (Wheating) in the race was a thrill for everyone in attendance and you could tell he had a positive impact for everyone entered into the event.”
In addition to the great performances turned in by current WOU athletes, the John Knight Twilight meet has showcased the talents of Wolves alumni as well. Each year, alumni participation increases at the meet as a number of former Wolves attended and competed at the meet.
Former WOU student-athlete
Janna Vander Meulen captured the 100-meter hurdles crown with a time of 15.58 while former Wolves runner
Landon Burningham won the 400-meters in a time of 49.27.
“It's always great to see our alumni come back to attend and participate in the meet,” Johnson said. “Having the alumni around really makes this meet a success and I look forward to what future meets have to offer.”
Other highlights of the annual meet included the Western Oregon women's 4x100 women's team capturing the event with a time of 47.85 while the men's 4x400-meter relay team won with a time of 3:21.48.
WOU will return to action on Thursday, April 18, at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif.
