DAY ONE RESULTS
NAMPA, Idaho – The Western Oregon University women's and men's track and field teams qualified several student-athletes into event finals on the first day of the 2014 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Championships Friday.
Madison McClung advanced to the 60-meter and 200-meter finals. The senior won her 60-meter heat with a time of 7.93, matching the fourth best preliminary time. She then won her 200-meter heat at 25.63, the sixth fastest prelim time. The Cottage Grove, Ore. native is the school record holder in both events.
In the women's 400 meters,
Audrey Hellesto's time of 58.24 qualified the junior for the finals. It was also the second fastest time on the WOU all-time top 10 list.
Bailey Beeson ran the third fastest 800-meter time in school history. The sophomore qualified for Saturday's final with a time of 2:16.96. That finish was the seventh best Friday.
Jeff Howard also qualified for two event finals. The sophomore ran the third and eighth fastest times in the 200-meter (22.32) and 60-meter (7.13) prelims. His 200-meter time is ninth all-time at Western Oregon.
Ryan Hansen and
Josh Hanna finished fifth and sixth in the 800 meters, after placing first and second in their heat.
Kaelyn Byrum scored six team points in the men's high jump. His 6-3 (1.95m) mark finished third in the event. The Wolves received three points from
Kyle Long in the men's long jump. The junior returned from a recent injury to finish sixth in the conference with a top mark of 21-6 (6.59 meters).
Charlene Harber's fifth place pentathlon finish scored four points for the Western Oregon women. The freshman amassed 2,998 points, the fifth most in school history.
As a team, the Western Oregon men scored 14 1/3 points on the first day and sit in fifth place. The WOU women totaled eight points and are in seventh. After five events, the Western Washington men lead the team standings. The Northwest Nazarene women have a slim lead on WWU after six events.
"Overall, the day was fine for us," Wolves' Head Coach
Mike Johnson said. "The dynamic of the conference is changing and right now we're reconfiguring our team and what we do to challenge the other programs. We had several good performances today. I think
Kyle Lane's effort had to be the highlight coming back from his injury."
The second day begins with the men's weight throw and women's high jump at 10 a.m. The running events begin at 11:20 a.m. Live results will be available on WOUWolves.com.
