Baseball Takes CSUMB Series

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Western Oregon University men's baseball team cruised to a series win at No. 18 Cal State-Monterey Bay with 7-5 and 7-1 victories Monday.

The Wolves (3-1) open their 2014 schedule with impressive victories at the No. 2 NCBWA NCAA Div. II West Region ranked team, CSUMB. The Wolves entered the series ranked ninth in the region. Daniel McNabb finished with six hits in nine at bats. The senior had six RBI and two doubles Monday against the Otters. Nathan Etheridge was 5-for-8 on the day.

"We got two quality outings from our starters today," WOU Head Coach Kellen Walker said. "Eric Huson was able to keep us within striking distance until we were able to come up with some key hits. Clark McKitrick was able to mix and match and competed very well for us in his first outing in a Wolves uniform.

"We had some good efforts by guys coming out of the pen and off of the bench. It took the entire roster to find a way to get the series against a very good Monterey Bay team."

The Wolves needed a rally to pull off the win in the first game. CSUMB got out to an early 2-0 lead and led 5-1 after four innings. The Otters outhit WOU, 10-8, but it was Western Oregon that took advantage of their opportunities.

McNabb had four RBI after going 3-for-5 at the plate, while Huson had a solid outing on the mound. Huson allowed three earned runs on six hits through six innings of work. The junior threw 78 pitches, 52 were strikes, and struck out three Otters. Zach Kayser (1-0) picked up the win, giving up one in one inning. Kody Stone picked up his second save of the season after sealing the victory in the bottom of the ninth.

After Cal State-Monterey Bay opening the game with two runs in the first inning, Caleb Falck scored Etheridge in the top of the second on a ground out to second to trim the lead to one. Two more Otters crossed home plate in the bottom half of the inning. Western Oregon was held to one hit and scoreless over the next two innings, while CSUMB added another run in the fourth.

The Wolves cut the lead to one after a three-run fifth inning. Chris Bradshaw got on base with a double to left field. Two batters later he was brought in off of a Matt Taylor single up the middle on a 3-2 count. A McNabb two-RBI double followed to complete WOU's scoring. Marcus Madden cut the lead to one with an RBI single in the seventh inning.

Western Oregon took its first lead in the top of the eighth. With two outs and the bases loaded, McNabb singled through the right side on a first pitch and brought in Taylor and Bradshaw. Cal State-Monterey Bay loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Stone and the Wolves escaped with the victory.

The Wolves stranded 12 runners on base, and committed three of the game's five errors. CSUMB left six runners on. Brian Hamm and Kaden Kamoe both had two doubles for the Otters. Chris Daniels pitched the first four innings, allowing only two hits and one earned run. Rickey Guerrero (0-1) was credited with the loss after throwing 1.1, giving up two runs on two hits.

In Game 2, it was Western Oregon that got to the early lead and eased to the 7-1 victory. McNabb and Etheridge both went 3-for-4, and both had two RBI. McKitrick (1-0) grabbed his first victory of the season in his debut. The junior allowed no runs and struck out five CSUMB batters. Fifty-three of his 95 pitches were strikes.

McNabb opened the second inning with a double down the left field line. Etheridge, the next batter, brought in McNabb with a single to left center. Will Chavarria drove in Etheridge on a sacrifice fly. The third inning featured two more runs from the Wolves on RBI's by Tim Rausch and McNabb.

Western Oregon broke the game open with three runs on four hits in the top of the fifth. McNabb, Etheridge and Chavarria all recorded RBI singles in the inning. The Otters had one run in the bottom of the seventh to complete scoring. Brian Scott (0-1) had the loss for Cal State-Monterey Bay, which left nine runners on base and committed two errors.

The Wolves travel 161 miles north to Rohnert Park for a five-game series at Sonoma State. The series starts with a single game Thursday at 2 p.m. The Seawolves will be making their 2014 debut. Live stats will be available will be on WOUWolves.com.
