DAY ONE RESULTS

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University women's and men's track and field teams had successful first days at the 2014 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships Friday.
 
On a wet and cold day, the conditions were not in favor of the student-athletes, but the Wolves advances several participants to their respective event finals Saturday.
 
Emmi Collier scored eight points for the Wolves' women with a second place finish in the shot put. Her third throw was her best at 43-11.75 (13.40 meters). Northwest Nazarene's Vessie Umu won the event with a mark of 44-3.5 (13.50m).
 
Zach Holloway and Brady Beagley scored 10 points for the WOU men in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Holloway placed third in the event with a time of 9:31.20, while Beagley came in fifth at 9:32.40. Oliver Jorgensen of Simon Fraser won with a time of 9:17.20.
 
In the men's long jump, Matson Hardie and Kyle Lane, totaled five team points with sixth and seventh place finishes. Hardie's best mark was 21-7.25 (6.58m) and Lane had a top leap at 21-5.5 (6.54m).
 
The Wolves' men had three of the top six finishes in the men's 800 meters. Sam Naffziger (1:53.47), Ryan Hansen (1:53.49), and Josh Hanna (1:53.68) all qualified for Saturday's final. They were fourth, fifth, and sixth Friday.
 
Madison McClung moved onto the women's 100-meter final after having the second-best time in the preliminaries. The senior crossed the line at 12.65. She won the second heat. In the men's 100 meters, Tyrell Williams and Jeff Howard both qualified. Williams' time of 11.07 was third Friday, while Howard's time of 11.37 just got him in at eighth.
 
McClung also qualified for the 200-meter final. She raced to a 25.34 finish, the second-best finish Friday. Williams had the top finish on the men's side. The junior crossed the line at 21.42, nearly setting new stadium and championship records.
 
Rochelle Pappel advanced to the women's 100-meter hurdle finals. The sophomore's time of 15.47 was the fifth fastest Friday. In the men's 110-meter hurdles, Kody Rhodes and Brett Campbell both qualified for the finals. Rhodes had the third-best preliminary time at 15.01 and Campbell was at 15.76 in eighth.
 
In the 400-meter hurdles, Audrey Hellesto qualified on the women's side with a time of 1:05.44. Rhodes qualified for the men's final with a time of 54.60.
 
Aaron Whitaker had the seventh-fastest 400-meter time. The freshman qualified for the finals with a time of 49.60.
 
The Western Oregon men are in fifth place with 20 points. The WOU women are in ninth with eight points.
 
Field events get underway Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The women's hammer throw is the first event of the day. On the track, the women's 4x400-meter relay is the first event at 11 a.m. Live results will be available on WOUWolves.com.
