FULL SCHEDULECHAMPIONSHIP INFOMONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University women's and men's track and field teams had six student-athletes selected as participants in the 2014 NCAA Div. II Outdoor National Championships.
The six student-athletes represent one of the largest contingents WOU will ever take to a national track and field championship.
Seabre Church is the lone Wolf from the women's squad travelling.
Brady Beagley,
Shane Brooks,
Josh Hanna,
Justin Larson, and
Tyrell Williams represent the WOU men. Church, Brooks, and Larson all qualified for last season's national championships. Brooks finished 11th, while
Amanda Schumaker completed her career with her fourth-straight All-American finish in sixth place.
Church was also the only Western Oregon representative that had an automatic-qualifying mark to the national championship. The senior had a top mark of 155-9 (47.48 meters) this season. That mark, thrown at the OSU Invitational on March 7, was the second-best on the WOU all-time list. It was also the third-best throw in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and eighth-ranked toss in NCAA Div. II this year. She finished second at the GNAC Championship last Saturday.
In the men's javelin, Brooks and Larson had the 13th and 18th top marks in NCAA Div. II this season. Both had NCAA provisional-qualifying marks. Brooks threw 211-7 (64.49m) at the OSU Invitational and Larson had a top mark of 206-10 (63.04m) at the John Knight Twilight. They were the third and fifth top marks in the conference in 2013, and second and third on the WOU all-time list.
Hanna posted the ninth-fastest 800-meter time in NCAA Div. II this year. The sophomore crossed the line at 1:50.45 at the OSU High Performance meet on May 2. The time is second on the WOU all-time list. It was also the best time in the GNAC this year, and second all-time in conference history.
Beagley finished the regular season with three NCAA provisional marks, and will race in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the national championships. The senior's time of 9:07.66 at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival was the fastest in the conference this year. It was fourth on the WOU all-time list and 17th in NCAA Div. II.
The GNAC 200-meter champion, Williams, ran a provisionally-qualifying time of 21.19 at the OSU High Performance. That time was not only the second fastest in program history, but conference history as well. It's No. 19 in NCAA Div. II this season. Last week, he won the GNAC title with a time of 21.32, which were new conference championship and McArthur Field records.
The NCAA Div. II Outdoor National Championships are in Allendale, Mich., May 22-24. Grand Valley State University and the West Michigan Sports Commission are the hosts. Live coverage will be available on WOUWolves.com.
