Wolves fall 2-0 after second half rally

Despite Western Oregon soccer’s strong effort to equalize the match during a 1-0 deficit, Concordia sealed the victory with a last-minute goal

PORTLAND, Ore. – Both Western Oregon and Concordia fired continuous shots on goal, but it was the Cavaliers who would come out on top on Saturday evening.

In the first half, both teams competed, creating dangerous opportunities. Concordia (9-2-2, 6-1-1 GNAC) came close to scoring early with a couple free kicks that were taken at the half-way line. In both instances, the Cavaliers sent diagonal balls into the 18-yard box, but the Wolves' defense was able to clean things up, preventing Concordia from taking clear shots.

Western Oregon (6-6-1, 2-5-1 GNAC) had close chances as well. Kealakekua Makekau drove a cross into the 18-yard box where Taylor Higa volleyed the ball slightly high above the goal. Additionally, a free kick at the half-way line from Brooke Steinberg allowed Dana Goularte to volley a shot, but the blast resulted in a save.

After an even first half, the game picked up pace in the second. Concordia put a point on the board when Hannah Smith sent a long cross for Amanda Klep to head the ball into the goal.

The goal created momentum for the Cavaliers as they began to take more chances and continuously fire shots. Goalkeeper Nicole Tejada stood tall on her line as she faced four shots and made three saves within a four-minute time period.

In the 81st minute, the momentum shifted to the Wolves as they blasted shot after shot, trying to score the equalizer. They took five shots within the span of seven minutes with three on target, causing Concordia goalkeeper Olivia Brock to make critical saves.

Western Oregon had a strong offensive opportunity when Savannah Bogan beat the defender down the sideline and sent a cross for Higa to head the ball, but the shot was high. Makekau also blasted a shot, but Brock tipped the ball over the crossbar before it could touch the back of the net.

Despite the Wolves' effort, the Cavaliers shut them down as Ariel Kanable scored with 42 seconds remaining on the clock. As the majority of the Wolves remained on the opposite end of the field, pushing for the offensive attack, three of the Cavaliers took on one Western Oregon defender to eventually launch a shot to the top left corner of the goal.

Overall, Concordia outshot Western Oregon, 17-10. Eight Wolves took part in those ten shots as Makekau and Higa each had two shots, and Goularte, Caitlin Castillo, Mariah Konyn, Vicky Cruz Rosales, Allison Frost, and Allison Sprecher each had one.

On the goalkeeping end, Tejada made eight saves, whereas Brock made five.

The Wolves will return to Monmouth for their final home games of the season as they face Northwest Nazarene on Thursday, October 22 and Montana State Billings on Saturday, October 24. As Saturday is Senior Day, the Wolves will honor eight seniors who will be completing their final season of their college careers.
