PALO ALTO, Calif. – A select handful of Wolves competed at the 40th annual Stanford Track and Field Invitational Friday, as Western Oregon University's track and field team took home an individual title and had one runner qualify for the finals Friday at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Junior
Justin Larson brought home the Wolves' lone individual title on Day #1 of the meet, as he captured the javelin throw with a toss of 60.12 meters (197-03) en route to winning the event by almost two feet over Utah State's Devin Wright. Larson was one of four non-Division I competitors in the event and the only athlete to surpass 60 meters, as he accomplished the feat on his third throw.
Freshman
Cody Warner became the first Western Oregon athlete to qualify for Saturday's final, as he finished third in Section 5 of ther 100 meter dash in a time of 10.64 seconds. Warner would finish ninth overall to earn the final spot in tomorrow's finals, as the first-year Wolf posted a personal record time in the event.
On the women's side, junior
Emmi Collier would win Flight #2 of the shot put with a mark of 13.54 meters (44-05.25) en route to finishing fourth overall behind a trio of Division I athletes. Collier's winning throw would come on her final attempt, as she moved overtook Utah State's Maci Bingham to win the flight and move into the Top 4 overall.
Western Oregon will have four more student-athletes –
Josh Hanna,
Badane Sultessa,
Rebecca Laible, and
Amanda Short – compete in the 800 meter run, triple jump, and javelin, respectively, joining Warner in the 100 meter finals, as the Wolves will conclude competition at the Stanford Invite on Saturday, April 4, beginning at 9 AM in Palo Alto, California.
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Along with some Wolves competing at the Stanford Invitational, other members of Western Oregon University's track & field team competed at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival with senior
Rebecca Laible and freshman
Kylie Reinholdt finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the triple jump to highlight the Wolves' day.
In the triple jump, Laible's leap measured 11.14 meters (36-0.675) on his second attempt with Reinholdt going 10.95 meters (35-11.25) also on her second attempt.
Junior
Stephanie Stuckey would also post a Top 10 finish for Western Oregon, as she finished ninth in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:34.23 finishing third in Section #3 and posted the second fastest time in school history in the process.
Western Oregon will close out competition at the SF State Distance Carnival tomorrow – Saturday, April 4 – beginning at 10 AM in San Francisco, California.
