T&F | Aaron Whitaker sets new 400m record at OSU High Performance

FULL RESULTS (TFRRS)

CORVALLIS, Ore. –
A 17-year school record fell as senior Aaron Whitaker became the first Western Oregon runner to break the 48-second barrier in the 400 meters Saturday at the Oregon State High Performance Meet at Whyte Track and Field Center.

In addition, the Wolves had one event win that included an improvement on a school record and NCAA automatic qualifying mark, and six others nabbing provisionals.

Whitaker ran in the fastest heat of the 400 meters against Division I and high-level Division III competition, finishing second. His time of 47.96 broke the Western Oregon school record of Dante Betha set back in 2000. Whitaker eclipsed his previous personal best by over four-tenths of a second and now sits number seven all-time in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in the 400.

David Ribich maintained his perch atop the Division II qualifying list at 1,500 meters by finishing first among collegiate and track club competitors. Ribich lowered his WOU school and GNAC record time to 3:41.45. In the heat preceding Ribich's run, Dustin Nading ran a personal best time of 3:47.17 to finish 11th overall and remain number three on the WOU all-time list.

Freshman Codi Blodgett finished in the top half of the results in both the 100 meter (10.97, 8th) and 200 meter races (22.27, 6th).

On the women's side, the terrific trio of Olivia Woods, Megan Rose and Suzanne Van De Grift continue to post provisional qualifying effort. On Saturday, Woods posted the fastest Division II time of the meet at 800 meters at 2:08.65, finishing 14th. Two spots behind, Rose ran a career best 2:09.05 and Van De Grift finished 18th with a time of 2:09.47.

In the field events, Sheila Lima De La Cruz took eight in the javelin posting her best mark in her third attempt, a provisional qualifying mark of 44.41m (144-10) that was also her career best. Wesley Gray took second with a 14.69m effort in the triple jump while Alani Troutman had a jump of 7.03m to take fourth place in the long jump. Kegan Allen nearly had a two meter improvement in the hammer, taking third in the event at 53.06m.

The Wolves are scheduled to send split squads to a pair of events on Friday, May 5 – the Oregon Twilight in Eugene and the Ken Shannon Invitational hosted by the University of Washington in Seattle.
