MONMOUTH, Ore. - Even with the 2011 outdoor track & field came to a close last week at the National Championships, the academic award have continued to roll in for Western Oregon University.
The latest was
Annan Applebee,
Justin Karr and
Brandon Snook all earning first team Academic All-District VIII Collegiate Sports Information Directors' Association honors for the 2010-11 cross country and track & field seasons.
Karr, a senior with a double major in Psychology and Social Science, led the West Region with a 3.99 grade point average. The Tigard, Ore., native earned points for the Wolves at the GNAC Championships finishing sixth in the 10k with a season-best time of 31:42.93 to help WOU win the conference title. Karr is also a six-time GNAC All-Academic selection and a 2010 cross country USTFCCCA Academic All-American.
Snook, a senior from Oregon City, Ore. (Oregon City HS), earned All-West Region honors with a 3.86 GPA as an Earth Science major. He was also a standout performer for Western Oregon on the track. He placed second in the 3000m steeplechase at the 2011 GNAC Outdoor Championships and is a two-time GNAC All-Academic selection.
Applebee, who represented Western Oregon in the women's 800m run at the National Championships, was the third member of the CoSIDA All-West Academic team. The senior from Gladstone, Ore. (Gladstone HS), posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.83 as an Education major during her four years in Monmouth. Applebee placed third in the 800m at the GNAC championships and ran the second leg of the Wolves' third place 4x400m relay team to help the Western Oregon women take third in conference.
Western Oregon represented three of the nine members from the GNAC on the CoSIDA All-West Region first team.
These three will now move on to the national ballot to be voted on for Academic All-American honors along with every member of the all-region first teams.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track &Field Team in Division II, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or greater through the most-recent semester, completed at least 12 credit hours in the semester, and must have been either an automatic or a provisional qualifier for the indoor or outdoor conference meet.
